SMSC Certified as a Service Enterprise!

St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center is pleased to announce that we have been certified by Points of Light as a Service Enterprise! A Service Enterprise is an organization that fundamentally leverages volunteers and their skills throughout their organization to successfully deliver on its social mission.

Research conducted by the TCC Group, a national program and evaluation firm, found that organizations operating as Service Enterprises outperform peer organizations on all aspects of organizational effectiveness, and are more adaptable, sustainable and capable of scaling their work.

St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center (SMSC) completed an extensive assessment, over 20 hours of training and consulting and extensive internal planning and change to better integrate volunteers in our day to day operations. By achieving this level of excellence and certification, SMSC is now better equipped to leverage the time and talent of volunteers and better meet our mission.

With an extensive volunteer screening process and training plan that mimics that of staff now in place, our volunteers are expressing a higher level of commitment.  They are staying longer and volunteering more of their time.  Additionally, event volunteers are helping with multiple events because of how they are utilized.

Shauna Davis

Sophie’s artist Shauna Davis has an endless supply of enthusiasm, with a cheerful and bubbly personality that is contagious! Her clay bird mask made in the new ceramics department on our main campus is featured in the Holiday show: Wings & Snow. When asked for her inspiration for the mask she exclaimed, “I like to hear birds chirping!” while pointing up to indicate that birds fly in the sky. “I have fun playing with the clay, but it can be messy!” she said while showing off her carefully manicured nails. “Sometimes I get my nails done. It’s cool! My mom takes me and they use a special dryer to dry the polish.” When asked if her mom has her nails done at the same time Shauna got serious, “No, its just special for me and afterwards my mom buys me a slurpee as a treat!”
Shauna’s favorite art activity is drawing. “I like to draw at home too,” she added. On campus her favorite activity is swimming.” I use to be on the swim team but now I just swim laps in the pool.” She was especially excited about the brand new aquatics building saying, “I saw the new building because Kim Holt (the Aquatic’s Manager) showed me around. Big locker room, big bathrooms! The old building was too small – too small for me!”
Shauna’s favorite holiday is Christmas. She enjoys helping to decorate the tree with ornaments. “Open the gifts!” was her response when asked what her favorite thing was about the holiday, quickly adding,  “and sleeping in.”
When asked what her favorite food dish was, Shauna without hesitation said, “Salad – no more junk food!”
